Our Clinical Approach
No single therapy works for everyone. At FOY, we match methods to the person, their diagnoses, their history, and their goals. A client with anxiety and alcohol use may begin with CBT and motivational interviewing. A client with trauma and depression may add EMDR or other trauma-focused work. A client whose relationships are central to their struggles may work with attachment-based or family systems approaches.
Three principles guide our programming:
- Treat the whole picture. Mental health and substance use are addressed together, because each can fuel the other.
- Use methods with a research base. Our core therapies are established, evidence-based approaches. No therapy can promise a specific outcome, and we do not guarantee results.
- Support the clinical work with holistic practice. Yoga, breathwork, meditation, and similar practices complement therapy and do not replace it. See holistic modalities

Attachment-Based Therapy
Attachment-based therapy draws on research showing that early relationships shape how we handle trust, closeness, and stress as adults. In session, you explore how those patterns show up now, in relationships and in coping, and build new ways of connecting. It is often helpful for people with anxiety, depression, relational trauma, or substance use tied to relationship patterns. Learn more
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT is one of the most studied forms of talk therapy. It helps you notice the links between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and practice changing the patterns that keep you stuck. At FOY, CBT is used for anxiety, depression, and substance use, including skills for managing cravings and preventing relapse. Learn more
Culturally Sensitive Therapy
Effective care respects who you are, including your culture, background, identity, faith, and values. Culturally sensitive therapy makes space for these parts of your life, so that treatment fits you instead of asking you to fit it. It can improve trust and engagement in care. Learn more
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT teaches practical skills in four areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Originally developed for people with intense emotions, it is now widely used for mood disorders, trauma, and substance use. Skills groups give you tools to use between sessions. Learn more
EMDR
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing is a structured therapy used to help the brain process distressing memories, with the goal of reducing their emotional charge. It is recognized in clinical guidelines for PTSD, including by the World Health Organization. EMDR starts with preparation and safety, and moves at your pace. Learn more
Emotionally Focused Therapy
Emotionally focused therapy is grounded in attachment theory and helps people understand the emotions beneath their reactions and how those emotions shape relationships. It is best known for work with couples and families, and can also support individuals. Learn more
Gestalt Therapy
Gestalt therapy focuses on present-moment awareness and how you experience yourself right now. Through guided exercises and honest dialogue, you notice patterns in thoughts, feelings, and body sensations, and take responsibility for choices. It can help with unresolved emotions and avoidance. Learn more
Family Systems Therapy
Family systems therapy views a person as part of a family, where each member affects the others. It examines communication, roles, and patterns, and supports healthier boundaries and understanding. Substance use and mental health conditions often affect the whole family, and involving loved ones can strengthen recovery. Learn more
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
MBCT combines elements of CBT with mindfulness practice. It was designed to help people with recurring depression recognize early warning signs and step out of automatic negative thinking. The practices also support stress and anxiety management. Learn more
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational interviewing is a collaborative, nonjudgmental conversation style that helps you explore your own reasons for change. It is widely used in addiction treatment, where mixed feelings about change are common. Instead of pressure, you receive support in finding your own motivation. Learn more
Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic therapy explores how past experiences and unconscious patterns influence present feelings and behavior. By understanding where patterns come from, many people find greater insight and freedom to choose differently. It can help with long-standing depression, anxiety, and relationship difficulties. Learn more
Psychological Testing and Evaluation
A careful evaluation can clarify what is going on, including diagnosis, strengths, and treatment needs. Testing can help distinguish conditions that look alike, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and ADHD, and guide your plan. Learn more
Relational Therapy
Relational therapy treats the relationship between you and your therapist as a place where change happens. It also looks at how you relate to others and how those patterns affect mood, trust, and recovery. Learn more
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)
SFBT focuses on your goals and what is already working, rather than on analyzing problems. Questions help you define what you want, notice exceptions to the problem, and take practical next steps. It is a good fit for people who want a clear, forward-looking approach. Learn more
Somatic Therapy
Somatic therapy pays attention to the body’s role in stress, trauma, and emotion. By building awareness of sensations and learning ways to settle the nervous system, many people find it easier to process difficult experiences. At FOY, it works alongside breathwork, yoga, and other holistic practices. Learn more
Strength-Based Therapy
Strength-based therapy builds on your existing strengths, skills, and supports instead of focusing only on what is wrong. In recovery, this can improve confidence and motivation and help you apply what already works in your life. Learn more
Evidence-Based Trauma Treatments
Trauma-focused treatment helps people process traumatic experiences and reduce symptoms such as flashbacks, avoidance, and hyperarousal. Care begins with safety and stabilization and then moves to processing at a pace you agree to. Learn more
