What Is a Substance Use Disorder?
A substance use disorder is a medical condition in which a person continues to use alcohol or drugs despite harm to health, relationships, work, or safety. It ranges from mild to severe and may involve cravings, loss of control, tolerance, and withdrawal.
Substances include alcohol, opioids, stimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamine, cannabis, sedatives, and prescription medications. Substance use disorders often occur alongside mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and ADHD.
Recognizing Addiction: Signs and Symptoms
Signs include using more than intended, failed attempts to cut down, strong cravings, spending a lot of time using or recovering, neglecting responsibilities, continuing despite problems, tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms.
Some people function well while struggling privately with addiction. Warning signs can include secrecy, mood changes, health problems, and using to cope with stress or emotions. Withdrawal from alcohol or sedatives can be dangerous and needs medical supervision.
The Link Between Addiction and Mental Health
Mental health and addiction are deeply connected. Many people use substances to cope with anxiety, trauma, or depression, and substance use can cause or worsen mental health symptoms. When only one is treated, the other often leads to relapse. FOY treats both together.

Adults Living With Substance Use Who Need More Than Weekly Therapy
PHP and IOP are for adults who need more than weekly therapy, have a safe place to live, and are medically stable. PHP and IOP often serve as a step down from detox or residential care, or as a first level of care when 24 hour supervision is not needed. Anyone who needs medical detox may need to begin at a higher level of care.
FAQs
What substances does FOY treat?
FOY treats alcohol and drug use disorders.
What is the difference between PHP and IOP for addiction?
PHP involves more hours and days of treatment per week than IOP. Many clients begin in PHP and step down to IOP as they stabilize.
Do I need detox before starting PHP or IOP
If you are at risk of withdrawal, you may need medical detox first. An assessment will identify your needs.
Can PHP or IOP treat addiction without a residential stay?
For many adults with a stable home and no need for 24 hour supervision, yes. PHP and IOP provide structured treatment while you stay at home.
Can I keep working during treatment?
Many clients attend IOP around work or school. PHP requires a larger daily commitment, and our team can help with FMLA paperwork.
Is it too late to get help, or am I not bad enough
You do not need to reach a crisis to benefit. Earlier treatment is generally easier than later treatment.
Does insurance cover PHP or IOP for substance use disorders?
Many plans cover PHP and IOP for substance use disorders when medical necessity criteria are met, and federal parity law requires mental health and substance use benefits to be comparable to medical benefits. FOY is in-network with Blue Shield, Cigna, and TRICARE through TriWest, and we verify your benefits at no cost.
Does FOY accept out-of-network PPO insurance for substance use disorders treatment?
Yes. FOY works with out-of-network PPO plans from Anthem, Aetna, Multiplan, HMC HealthWorks, and Blue Cross Blue Shield. Many PPO plans reimburse part of PHP and IOP costs after your out-of-network deductible is met. We explain your deductible, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximum before you decide, and we handle prior authorization paperwork.
How is PHP or IOP different from weekly therapy for substance use disorders?
Weekly therapy often lacks the structure and accountability needed in early recovery. PHP and IOP add daily support, group treatment, and relapse prevention work.
