PHP/IOP Program

PHP and IOP Treatment in Agoura Hills, California

A Complete Guide to Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient Care at FOY Wellness and Recovery

If weekly therapy is no longer enough, but you do not need to live in a facility, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) or intensive outpatient program (IOP) may be the right level of care. FOY Wellness and Recovery is a licensed outpatient program in Agoura Hills, California for adults facing mental health conditions, substance use, and co-occurring disorders. You attend structured treatment during the day and return home afterward.

FOY is in-network with Blue Shield, Cigna, and TRICARE through TriWest, and we work with out-of-network PPO plans including Anthem, Aetna, Multiplan, HMC HealthWorks, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and more. Our admissions team verifies your benefits for free.

Our Clinical Team

Clinical care at FOY is led by Clinical Director Dr. Shannon Dobbs, a licensed clinical psychologist with more than 15 years of experience treating anxiety, depression, mood disorders, trauma, and substance use. She oversees each individualized treatment plan and reviews it as you progress.

Working with her are primary therapists, credentialed holistic practitioners, case management, behavioral health technicians, and an admissions team that handles insurance verification and prior authorization.

What Are PHP and IOP, and How Do They Work?

Partial hospitalization (PHP) is the most intensive outpatient level of care. Clients attend treatment for much of the day, typically several days a week, and go home at night. PHP offers daily structure and close clinical contact without an overnight stay.

Intensive outpatient (IOP) involves fewer hours per week than PHP. Sessions are scheduled so many clients can continue working, studying, or caring for family. IOP is also a common step down from PHP.

Both levels of care combine individual therapy, group therapy, skills training, and relapse prevention or coping skills work, depending on your needs. Many clients begin in PHP, move to IOP, and then continue with weekly outpatient therapy and our FOY Life alumni community. Your clinical team recommends the right level based on a full assessment.

Who Needs PHP or IOP?

PHP or IOP may be a good fit if you:

  • Have tried weekly therapy and still feel stuck or overwhelmed
  • Are stepping down from inpatient or residential treatment and want continued support
  • Are struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, or mood symptoms that interfere with daily life
  • Are using alcohol or drugs in ways you cannot control, alongside mental health symptoms
  • Need more structure than weekly sessions but have a safe, stable place to live
  • Want to keep working, studying, or caring for family while getting intensive treatment

PHP and IOP are not appropriate for everyone. Anyone in immediate danger, or who needs 24 hour supervision or medical detox, may need a higher level of care first. Our assessment will tell you honestly whether FOY is the right fit.

Dual Diagnosis and Co-Occurring Disorders in PHP and IOP

What dual diagnosis means. A dual diagnosis, also called a co-occurring disorder, means a person has a mental health condition and a substance use disorder at the same time. It is common, and it is treatable.

Why the two are linked. Many people use alcohol or drugs to cope with anxiety, depression, trauma, or sleep problems. Over time, substance use can worsen those same symptoms, creating a cycle that is hard to break alone.

Why treating both matters. When only one condition is treated, the other often pulls a person back. Integrated care addresses both at the same time with one team and one plan.

How PHP and IOP help. The daily structure of PHP and IOP gives you regular clinical contact, skills practice, and accountability while you stay connected to home and work.

Who benefits most. People who have relapsed after addiction treatment alone, or who have had therapy that never addressed their substance use, often benefit from integrated dual diagnosis care.

A note on safety. Some people need medical detox before starting PHP or IOP. Our assessment will identify this early.
