Culturally Sensitive Therapy for Mental Health and Addiction Treatment

FOY Wellness and Recovery is a licensed PHP and IOP program in Agoura Hills, California. Our clinical program is developed and overseen by Clinical Program Director Dr. Shannon Dobbs, a licensed clinical psychologist. Culturally Sensitive care is integrated across our clinical programming, ensuring treatment respects each client’s cultural background and identity.

What Is Culturally Sensitive Therapy?

Culturally Sensitive Therapy is an approach in which clinicians actively account for a client’s cultural background, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, and lived experience when providing treatment, rather than applying a single standardized approach to every client. Cultural context shapes how symptoms present, how distress is expressed, and what recovery meaningfully looks like, and clinical research increasingly supports culturally responsive care as improving engagement and outcomes.

How Culturally Sensitive Therapy Works

Clinicians are trained to recognize their own cultural assumptions, ask about and incorporate each client’s specific cultural context into treatment planning, and adapt evidence-based modalities, such as CBT or family therapy, to be relevant and respectful of a client’s cultural framework.
